The Des Moines Area Religious Council (DMARC) has thoughts on the upcoming changes to the SNAP program. SNAP is the largest federal nutrition program helping our neighbors in need. In Polk County alone, 75,217 individuals received SNAP benefits in the calendar year 2024, receiving an average daily benefit of $5.74 per person. While this may seem a modest amount to spend on groceries, it dwarfs the help charity can provide. DMARC'S role is to advocate for policy solutions that help to shorten the lines outside the local food pantries. Food insecurity is and will increase!!! SNAP provided $9.1 million in April 2024 vs $323,509 DMARC.
HOW TO CONTINUE TO HELP: The Cubs home games are now in progress. If you take 3 nonperishable food items to the DMARC booth there, you can get a free general admission ticket. Our Farmer's Market is in progress. You are invited to bring baked goods, houseplants and garden produce. Donations there to DMARC and Comet Cupboard. Thank you!!
HOW OUR CONGREGATION CAN HELP: DNARC PREFERS MONEY!!! DNARC can buy 2 to 6 times more with our money than we can ($10=9 meals). If you wish to help, please check out the church's VANCO giving app or you may WRITE A CHECK (DMARC in the memo) out to Polk City United Methodist Church, 1421 West Broadway, Polk City, Iowa 5022 ATTN Finance Secretary or PLACE IN THE OFFERING PLATE. Thank you for helping our hungry neighbors!
