North Polk Comet Cupboard
Helping Neighbors In Need

What began as an Eagle Scout project with a vision to share food with neighbors in need through a little free library pantry, has grown into so much more. Embraced by a generous community, volunteers of all ages collect food and donations, sort and organize food, pick up food rescue items, and share the abundance with other organizations.

Open pantry hours are the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays from 5-6pm each month. Food is also made available at the Polk City Library anytime the library is open, and 24/7 in the outdoor pantry at the entrance of the Polk City UMC parking lot.

Comet Cupboard Volunteers:
  • fill the outdoor cupboard
  • maintain food at the library
  • work with the open food pantry
  • pickup food rescue from Fareway
  • deliver food rescue to other sites

Food rescue is picked up on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday each week and is quickly moved in and out. We often receive an abundance of food and the food not used in Polk City is shared with other organizations around the metro each month, including:

  • Moulton Elementary Food Pantry
  • Bethel Mission
  • CFUM
  • DMARC Food Pantry in Ankeny
Supported by a generous community

The Polk City community, North Polk Schools, Polk City businesses, Beautiful Savior youth group, and the Korean Church in Polk City are also generous supporters of the community pantry.

You can donate to the Comet Cupboard by bringing goods to the Cupboard itself or placing them in the plastic crate by the front door of the church. Financial donations are welcome. Make the check out to Polk City United Methodist with Comet Cupboard noted on it.
